TOAST

23144 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale

203 Piece Street, Birmingham

Explore Metro Detroit in a vehicle built for discovery. Chevy Equinox combines sleek looks, maximum comfort and cutting edge entertainment to navigate your city in style.

Toast is renowned for its cozy, inviting atmosphere and a menu that puts an innovative twist on classic dishes. Among their offerings, the potato takes center stage in dishes at both locations. Potato sides include homemade fries and cheesy gratin potatoes (available in Birmingham) to accompany your breakfast or brunch, or you can get potatoes in another form entirely with an available hash. Both locations have a corned beef hash, with Sy Ginsberg’s corned beef, onion, green pepper, cheddar cheese, poached eggs, and toast, and Trashy Hashy, which features bacon, onion, green pepper, tomato, jalapeno, green onion, pepper jack cheese, turkey gravy, over easy eggs, and toast paired with the shredded potatoes.

THE POTATO PLACE

107 West Warren Avenue, Detroit

True to its name, The Potato Place specializes in potato-based dishes, turning this common ingredient into a star. Here, the baked potato is elevated with a range of toppings from classic sour cream and chives to more gourmet options like chicken Alfredo, cajun chicken, or seafood saute. Each potato is a canvas for flavor, providing a comforting and filling meal in this compact and cozy spot. If you’d rather build your own potato creation, you can do that too at The Potato Place, selecting everything from the butter and cheeses to stuffings, toppings, and sauces.

CUTTER’S BAR & GRILL

2638 Orleans Street, Detroit

For almost two decades, Cutter’s Bar & Grill has been serving up its famous burgers, but its potato options definitely stand out too. There is the Cutter’s Bowl appetizer, for tater tots loaded with cheese, grilled onions, peppers, and your choice of ground beef, chicken bites, or steak bites. Additionally, Cutter’s Bar & Grill has different loaded potato choices with broccoli and cheese, like shrimp, chicken, and more. If you’re just wanting a simple side, you can always choose the hand-cut fries, tater tots, or cheese fries to go with your entree.

THE MORRIE

511 South Main Street, Royal Oak

260 North Old Woodward Avenue, Birmingham

The Morrie offers a lively atmosphere where music and food blend seamlessly. Here, tots and waffle fries are available as an add-on for most entrees, but there are a couple of other stand-out potato dishes. The loaded waffle fries are a personal favorite, as they are deliciously topped with queso fundido, chorizo, scallions, cilantro, and jalapeño, and are only available at the Royal Oak location. Additionally, the happy hour menu at both spots has Asian tots available, with fried tots, shaved nori, sambal ginger aioli, and sesame seeds.

GANDY DANCER

401 Depot Street, Ann Arbor

Gandy Dancer, with its elegant setting and historic charm, presents potatoes in a sophisticated light. You can of course get French fries with any of the lunch handhelds, like the New England seafood roll or the prime rib French dip. As for other lunch and dinner entrees, many are accompanied by smashed redskin potatoes, like the lemon chicken or the filet mignon. The crispy duck has a Grand Marnier demi-glace and is served with vanilla sweet potato mash. As its final potato option, the roasted branzino is served with crispy smashed Yukons along with basque vegetables, and a Calabrian chili lemon vinaigrette. Each potato selection complements its protein selections beautifully, in a way that highlights the potatoes’ natural flavors.

MERCURY BURGER & BAR

2163 Michigan Avenue, Detroit

With a modern diner vibe, Mercury Burger & Bar takes a classic approach to potato dishes, with their hand-cut fries and tater tots stealing the spotlight. These fries are a testament to the power of simplicity, fried to a perfect crisp and seasoned with your choice of garlic, sea salt, or pepper. The specialty fries are also great, with options like chili cheese, bacon topped, sweet potato, and poutine available. As for the tots, you can get them plain, as poutine, chili cheese covered, or as tachos, which feature cheese sauce, bacon, salsa, cowboy candy, and cilantro sour cream atop the delicious tater tots. Any of these choices is an ideal complement to Mercury’s gourmet burgers, making for a satisfying meal any time of the day. For more French fry options, check out our list here.
